The northrhine-westphalian Minister of Agriculture and Consumer Protection Minister Silke Gorißen has visited the University of Bonn’s sustainability campus, Campus Klein-Altendorf (CKA) on September 4, 2023. The talks focused on the University of Excellence’s successes in research on renewable raw materials and the transdisciplinary orientation of its research projects. In addition to sustainable and recyclable building materials and resource-saving vegetable and fruit cultivation without peat, the Cluster of Excellence Phenorob also presented its developments in the intersection of agriculture and robotics.

“Innovations for agriculture and forestry are being developed here at the Sustainability Campus Klein-Altendorf: In Rheinbach, new ways of cultivating and managing fields with robots are being developed to achieve a reduction in crop protection and fertilizers. Research is also being carried out here on climate-resistant tree types that can bind large quantities of CO2 and are particularly suitable for timber construction. The broad spectrum of research projects on the campus is impressive. I am pleased that North Rhine-Westphalia has such an excellent research landscape with such a wide range of projects that both benefit domestic agriculture and serve climate protection,” said Minister Silke Gorißen.

On July 10, 2023, Silke Gorißen, Minister of Agriculture and Consumer Protection of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, visited the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Bonn. She was accompanied by speakers from her ministry. Prof. Dr. Thomas Heckelei, Dean of the Facultuy of Agriculture and Vice Dean Prof. Dr. Heiko Schoof welcomed the delegation in the Dean’s Office together with some selected representatives of the Faculty, who presented to the minister the current developments of the faculty in the context of the excellence strategy of the University of Bonn. One focus was the presentation of the research going on in the Cluster of Excellence PhenoRob by spokesperson Prof. Dr. Heiner Kuhlmann. Minister Gorißen showed great interest in the research of the cluster and made her support clear. In a pleasant discussion atmosphere, a large number of socially relevant topics could be addressed and the minister was given a comprehensive insight, not least into the cooperation between the ministry and the faculty. Follow-up talks with the representatives of the departments have already been agreed and the exchange should continue to take place closely.

The Cluster of Excellence PhenoRob introduced itself alongside the other clusters of excellence, the prorectorates, and the six transdisciplinary research areas to students, university members as well as citizens of the region. Rector Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Michael Hoch and mayor Katja Dörner visited PhenoRob and the transdiscipinary research area 6 at their booth. We were happy to inform about our research and why we do what we do at PhenoRob even with the smallest researchers at Wissenschaftsfestival – and the kids gave us some art in return!

PhenoRob member Dr. Lasse Klingbeil left the young audience in awe by demonstrating how drones work and by explainig how they can be utilized in agriculture to help detect weeds and plant diseases

The initiative of the Youth University of Bonn “Kinderuni” aims to encourage young children to get to know the world of science and research well before the start of their higher education. This summer semester, for the 10th time in a row young pupils between the age of 8 and 13 had the opportunity to briefly experience a day of a university student – namely, attending lectures in big lecture halls, listening to professors and learning about the different interesting fields of science. To inspire curious young minds and to capture their attention, the Kinderuni lectures this semester revolved around different intriguing fields of science, such as museology, theology, astronomy, zoology, criminology and last but not least, agriculture. In his lecture about the latter topic, Dr. Lasse Klingbeil, Professor of Geodesy and Geoinformation held an interactive and engaging presenation about drones and their usage in agriculture.

Those young pupils who managed to visit 10 out of 12 similar lectures in the last two semesters, were rewarded with the Kinderuni-degree, which was handed out to the hard-working young scientists on the 12th of June.

On May 8, 2023, the Business and Stakeholder Network, a network sponsored by the Cluster of Excellence PhenoRob, the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Bonn and the Theodor Brinkmann Foundation, kicked off with a career fair that primarily addressed young scientists. The approximately 300 visitors of the fair had the opportunity to find out more about non-academic career paths. The fair showcased 30 companies on two floors from a wide range of sectors, including companies and organizations from the agricultural sector with a direct connection to the cluster’s research topic as well as exhibitors from related fields, such as autonomous driving, surveying and nutrition. The range of exhibitors extended from startups, ministries and associations to worldwide operating companies.

With his presentation “Ist das Kunst oder kann das weg? Wie Maschinen Pflanzenbilder für die Landwirtschaft der Zukunft malen” PhenoRob PhD student Lukas Drees wins the Excellence Slam 2022 of the University of Bonn. His slam focused on the contribution that artificially generated plant pictures can make to the agriculture of the future. Each Cluster sent one PhD student or professor into the race: 5 Clusters, 10-minute talks and 1 winner – Lukas’ slam inspired the audience so much so that he was applauded the most of all 5 slammers. Sound-wise, the venerable arcarde courtyard turned into a soccer stadium when Lukas finished his talk. Congratulations!

A recorded livestream of the event can be found here.
